Wonder Woman 1984 is an American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Wonder Woman. It is the sequel to 2017’s film Wonder Woman, and the 9th installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed Patty Jenkins from a script she wrote with Geoff Johns and David Callaham.
The film sets in 1984, 66 years after the events of the first film, and follows Diana/Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), who is now working as a senior anthropologist at Smithsonian institute in Washington, DC. At work, she meets a new employee Barbera (Kristen Wiig), an insecure and not so confident woman who immediately starts to idolize and envy Diana. Meanwhile, a failing businessman Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) plans to get his hands on the ancient artifact called Dreamstone, which is currently located at the Smithsonian. What is Maxwell’s sinister plan? How his paths cross with Diana? Who is Cheetah? And how Barbera gets involved in the conspiracy? forms the crux of the film.
This is the fourth time Gal Gadot has reprised her role as Wonder Woman. And, till now, she has perfectly embodied the persona of Wonder Woman. But, I must say, this film is nowhere near to previous film’s action and thrilling heights. I don’t believe, it is the same director’s film who has created 2017’s Wonder Woman. The story of the film is overindulgent & cliché. But, it still manages to offer enough vibrant escapism to satisfy fans of the franchise and its classic central character.
The action sequences are also not appealing. All the time, I felt like I’ve already seen splendid action sequences and a better version of Wonder Woman, and this film has degraded it. So, I’m just gonna pretend that this film never happened. In my opinion, the sequel to the superhero film works only when the villain is more powerful than the previous film. The powerful villain challenges the protagonist, breaks the protagonist, and pushes the protagonist to achieve the next level. And, this film missed it completely. I tried to find the moral compass of the film, and I found it – “No true hero is born from lies”. But, it is not that impacting. What I liked the most about the film is the chemistry between Diana and Steve. In the first film, Diana was the fish out of the water, and Steve was her guide. But, in this film, the roles are reversed. And, it is really fun to watch.
Verdict : It was this year’s one of the highly anticipated films, but it failed miserably to meet the standard.
