Mimi (2021) – Movie Review

Mimi is a comedy-drama film co-written and directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan. It is a remake of the Marathi film Mala Aai Vhhaychay! (2011) by Samruddhi Porey. The film is released on 26 July 2021 on digital streaming platforms Netflix and JioCinema.

The film starts with Summar (Evelyn Edwards) and John (Aiden Whytock), an American couple who cannot conceive, are visiting India in search of a surrogate mother. With the help of Bhanu (Pankaj Tripathi), a tourist taxi driver, their paths cross with Mimi (Kriti Sanon), a local dancer and an aspiring actress. After the initial hesitation, Mimi agrees to opt for surrogacy in exchange for ₹2 million to fulfill her dream of becoming a Bollywood actress. After the successful IVF procedure, Mimi becomes pregnant. And, where this journey of unexpected pregnancy takes Mimi to? forms the crux of the film.

The topic of surrogacy and IVF is not new to Bollywood films. We’ve already seen films like Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (2001), Vicky Donor (2013), & Good Newwz (2019). And, it is an official remake of a Marathi film. So, plotwise it is not fresh, but execution-wise it succeeds in delivering a heartfelt comedy-drama. The film has a nice blend of humor and emotions, more precisely, situational humor. At a high level, in the first half, the film is light & mostly comedy drives it. And, in the second half, an emotional heavy drama follows but doesn’t drown into it. The little comic and sweet moments sprinkled in the second half keep it engaging and entertaining.

The film is focused on Mimi’s empowering and compassionate story of exploring her motherhood through surrogacy. After Kriti’s commendable work in Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017) & Luka Chuppi (2019), in this film, she has given her career-best performance. Kriti carries the film on her shoulders. And, she is nicely supported by brilliant Pankaj Tripathi. His comic timing is perfect. He does not always need dialogues to convey what he wants to say. To add a cherry on the cake, the film also has an excellent supporting cast – Sai Tamhankar as Shama, Mimi’s best friend, Manoj Pahwa as Mimi’s father, Supriya Pathak as Mimi’s mother.

Verdict : The film is a good family entertainer which carefully handles a social taboo topic of Surrogacy. It definitely deserves a watch.

Rating : 3.8/5
