Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) – Movie Review

on

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a superhero film written by Michael Waldron and directed by Sam Raimi, who is well-known for directing the groundbreaking Spider-Man trilogy (2002-2007). The film is based on the Marvel Comics, featuring the titular character Doctor Strange. It is the sequel to Doctor Strange (2016) and the 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The film picks up after the events of WandaVision (2021), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). The film follows Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), where he comes across a teenage girl named America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) who is being hunted by multiiversal monsters. Doctor Strange, with Wanda’s (Elizabeth Olsen) help, decides to protect this girl from an unknown threat and it takes him on the adventure of the multiverse (of madness).

The basis of the film is set in the first half an hour, and what follows next is a mind-blowing adventure through the multiverse. The film has really good twists and turns. The story also goes into some very unexpected and daring plot lines. Visually, the film is great for the eyes. All credit goes to Sam Raimi for bringing his own flavor to the film. The film has a lot of horror movie elements sprinkled all over it (which made me remember Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead). And, one of the action sequences gives a nod to his movie Spider-Man 2. Action choreography, visual effects, background score – everything is worth applauding.

The chemistry between the characters of Doctor Strange and America Chavez is enjoyable and gives a buddy-movie feel to the film. And, throughout the film, we can see their characters getting developed really well. Wanda’s character has a neatly carved emotional depth, and Elizabeth Olsen gives full justice to it. There are many emotional moments in the film which actually drive it ahead. The pacing of the film is really good, it doesn’t let you take your eyes off of the screen. But, the film still manages to take time to breathe in the important moments.

Verdict: It is one of the highly anticipated films of the year, and it does live up to expectations. A decent addition to the MCU. The film totally deserves to be seen on the big screen because of what a mind-bending phenomenon it is.

Rating: 3.9/5
