Mirzapur is an action crime-drama web series created by Puneet Krishna and Karan Anshuman. It is a series on Amazon Prime Video produced by Excel Entertainment. Mirzapur: Season 1 is known for its solid characters, gripping crime drama, and the use of over-the-top violence. And, the series has been renewed for a second season and is scheduled for the 23rd October 2020 premiere. The series is available on Amazon Prime Video for streaming.
The series picks up exactly where it left at the end of Season 1. If you haven’t watched Season 1 already, then you can stop reading here. Season 1 spoilers ahead – At the end of Season 1, all the three generations of Tripathi (Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Pankaj Tripathi, & Divyendu Sharma) proves that they’re still the Kings of Mirzapur. After losing Bablu (Vikrant Massey) and Sweety (Shriya Pilgaonkar) at the Gorakhpur wedding massacre, Guddu (Ali Fazal), his sister Dimpy (Harshia Gaur), and Golu (Shweta Tripathi) are on the run for their life. On the other hand, Sharad Shukla (Anjum Sharma) becomes the don of Jaunpur, after the murder of his father by Guddu Pandit. Season 2 mainly centers around the conflict between these three families and tells the bloody story of who’ll get to sit on the throne of the lawless city of Mirzapur.
Towards the finale episode of Season 1, the stakes get really high and leave you craving for more. The series has built a great hype before the release of Season 2 because Season 1 ended with so many open-ended questions, which will be answered in this one. Once again, the narrative of the series is very gripping. As it is the 2nd season, all the characters are already well-built and just needed the path forward, and that’s what this series does. The series tries to give a justified arc to all of its characters. This season also introduces a few more characters to the story, and I totally understand the reason for creators for doing it. Because they want to expand the universe of this series. But, I must say, the newly introduced subplot doesn’t serve much to the central storyline. And, at some places, the series goes off-track.
Once again, the content of the series is very endearing and unapologetic, and never holds back in showing what it is. But, this season lowered the level of violence and brutality as compared to Season 1, and I think it is done for a good reason. The graphical violence in Season 1 was very creative and impressive but at the same time, it was disturbing for some viewers. The background score of the series is also one of the important factors. The cinematography and direction are also appealing.
All the lead and supporting performances in the series are worth appreciating. All the characters in this series are grounded and compelling. Alongside lead characters, the series also stars Rasika Dugal as Beena Tripathi, Shaji Chaudhary as Maqbool, Rajesh Tailang as Ramakant Pandit, Sheeba Chaddha as Vasudha Pandit, Amit Sial as RS Maurya, Asif Khan as Babar, Vijay Varma as Bharat Tyagi, and Lilliput as Dadda Tyagi. This time also, Mirzapur is all about Pankaj Tripathi as Kaleen Bhaiya, he steals every scene he is in. He is the main antagonist of the series, but his powerful portrayal of this character makes it more compelling than the protagonist characters. Ali Fazal and Shweta Tripathi play the broken but strong and determined characters, who have nothing but Revenge left in their life. These two characters keep a good balance between theirs and Pankaj Tripathi’s character.
Verdict : This season keeps the momentum of its previous season and gives a decent conclusion to the storyline and its characters. It is worth binge-watching.
