Rakhtcharitra (History of blood – in English) is an action crime-thriller film directed by Ram Gopal Varma and written by Prashant Pandey. The film is based on the life of Paritala Ravindra, an MLA & Former AP Cabinet Minister. The film was shot simultaneously in Telugu and Hindi.
The film sets in Anantapur and follows Pratap Ravi (Vivek Oberoi), a college-going student, who sets on the path of a vengeful blood feud when he gets the news of his father’s murder. Further, the film depicts Pratap’s journey from a dreaded gangster to becoming a politician.
I watched this film when it was released, and watched it again recently during the lockdown period. And, I must say, before Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), there was Rakhtcharitra. The film is not for the faint-hearted audience. The use of violence, blood, and gore depicted in the film may shock and unsettle the audience. Alongside, the film also has a compelling story and characters which shows how proficiently the subject material has been treated. The most significant part of the film is the lead performance by Vivek Oberoi; And, Abhimanyu Singh’s portrayal as devious Bukka Reddy. Like other characters, Bukka’s character is also based on real-life, and his deeds are regarded as one of the most terrifying villainous acts captured on screen. The film has a really good background score but sometimes it feels too much. The film is considered as one of the best coming from Ram Gopal Varma’s gangster films. The film also has a sequel RakhtCharitra 2 (2010), which unfortunately didn’t do that well as this one.
Verdict : The film is bold and disturbing, and if you like bloody vengeful stories then this one is a must for you.
