Greyhound is a period war drama film directed by Aaron Schneider. The film stars Tom Hanks in a lead role, who has also written the screenplay. The film was scheduled to be released theatrically on 12th June 2020. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film has started streaming worldwide on 10th July 2020 on Apple TV+.
The film is based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester. The film sets in 1942 and follows U. S. Navy Captain Ernest Krause (Tom Hanks) on his first wartime assignment. He is been assigned to lead ‘Greyhound’, the British Tribal-class destroyer ship; To escort the convoy consisting of 37 allied ships from Nazi U-boat wolfpacks.
The film is just 90 minutes long, and it makes good use of it to deliver tight and tense thriller. The action sequences are captivating but it feels repetitive. The characters always face life-threatening situations but it doesn’t hit us as it should, because all the characters are under-developed. In some places, when the characters were looking at each other without saying anything, then I was not able to understand what emotions they are emitting. It lacks the humane factor, which is required to make any film compelling. The film mainly focuses on the technicalities and the logistics of the battle. So, if you want to enjoy this film for what it is, you shouldn’t deviate your focus. The background score of the film is also enjoyable, but, sometimes it feels too much, and in some places, I was just not able to distinguish between the background score and firing.
Verdict : To get to know about the Battle of the Atlantic, and for Tom Hanks the film is good to watch.
