Gulabo Sitabo (2020) – Movie Review

Gulabo Sitabo is a comedy-drama film directed by Shoojit Sircar, who is well-known for his comedy films Vicky Donor (2012) and Piku (2015). The film is written by Juhi Chaturvedi. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead roles. Means, the leads from Vicky Donor, and Piku have come together for doubling up the fun ride. The film is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

The film sets in Lucknow and follows Mirza (Amitabh Bachchan), a rude owner of the old mansion, and Baankey (Ayushmann Khurrana), a stubborn tenant. And, these two scheming men get caught up in a game of trying to bout each other.

The film has an interesting plot where two headstrong characters are trying to pull each other’s legs. But the film’s pace is slow and takes its own time in setting up this world. The film is definitely not a fun ride as I expected it to be. The film is so quiet and so the humor in it. The narration of the film shifts so many times and doesn’t stick to one central thread. And, that’s where both story and characters fail to connect to its audience. I just kept it watching in the hope of getting something solid, but haven’t got anything. The climax is somewhat satisfactory. And, the film does have a good message towards the end. The film also casts Vijay Raaz and Brijendra Kala in the supporting roles. The performances in the film are good, which makes it watchable.

Verdict : Watching your favorite actors working together can be the only reason to watch this film.

Rating : 3/5
