The Invisible Man (2020) – Movie Review

The Invisible Man is a sci-fi horror mystery film written and directed by Leigh Whannell, who has previously directed Upgrade (2018). The film is a contemporary adaptation of the novel of the same name. by H. G. Wells and a reboot of The Invisible Man film series.

The film revolves around Cecilia Kass (Elisabeth Moss), who escapes from her abusive and controlling partner Adrian Griffin (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and disappears into hiding. Not so long into the film, Cecilia gets to know that Adrian has committed suicide and left her his fortune. But a series of bizarre events leads Cecilia to suspect that Adrian’s death was a hoax and she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.

When I watched the trailer of this film, I was totally excited. So, I went to the first-day show. And, I must say that the film has delivered much more than what was promised. This genre of sci-fi + horror had worked for Upgrade (2018) and has also worked perfectly for this one. The unique directing style by Leigh Whannell along with the ominous background score evokes the thrill and horror in the story. The film is well-acted, especially, Elisabeth Moss as a broken but a woman with a fighting spirit gives the needed emotional weightage to the film. The characters are compelling and their performances are totally convincing. I liked the way that the film has left some things unanswered; And even after the film has ended, it made the viewers think and decide about it. Though the complete film doesn’t let you take your eyes off the screen, the climax is just satisfactory and does not give you the exceptional end you’re waiting for.

Verdict : An authentic and impactful sci-fi horror film. A must watch.
