Parasite (2019) – Movie Review

Parasite is the South Korean dark-comedy thriller film co-written and directed by Bong Joon Ho. It is the first South Korean film to receive Academy Award recognition with six nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards. At the 77th Golden Globe Awards, the film has already won the award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The film revolves around the poor unemployed Kim family, consisting of father Ki-taek (Kang-ho Song), mother Chung-sook (Hye-jin Jang), son Ki-woo (Woo-sik Choi), and daughter Ki-jung (So-dam Park), who are living in a small basement apartment, working low-paying temporary jobs, and struggling to sustain a life. So, the Kim family makes a plan to infiltrate the super-rich and glamorous household of Park’s family by landing different personal jobs; Without letting Parks know that they are related to each other. The Park family also consists of four, father Dong-ik (Sun-kyun Lee), mother Yeon-kyo (Yoe-jeong Jo), son Da-song (Hyun-jun Jung), and daughter Da-hye (Ji-so Jung). Then things start falling apart when Kims get entangled in an unexpected incident.

Parasite is a really well-made and excellent film, which talks about the economic class differences in society. For telling the important story of indifferences in society, the film uses the metaphorical narration with the exact amount of dark-humor. The story of the film is brilliantly layered and uncovers in a surprising and nerve-racking manner. The film has a gripping storyline and it never loses the track from beginning to end. The film is unsettling and gives you the feeling that something is gonna go horribly wrong. The film is beautifully shot and it just hooks you to the screen. Every frame of the film talks for itself, more than just what characters are talking on-screen. I like it when films can convey so much just with its visuals without any spoonfeeding. I also found the similarities of this film’s social theme to Jordan Peele’s Us (2019).

Verdict : Undoubtedly, one of the best films of the year. A must watch.

Rating : 4.4/5
