Spider-Man: Far from Home is an action-adventure superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. The film is the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and the twenty-third film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Jon Watts, and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
The films follow the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), where Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is back to New York City, fighting criminals, and grieving over the death of his mentor/father-figure Iron Man. Meanwhile, the school organizes a summer field trip to Europe, where Peter Parker plans to confess his growing feelings for his classmate MJ (Zendaya) while avoiding his duty as a Spider-Man. While Parker is on a school trip to Europe, he is approached by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) to help them face elemental threats from another dimension aka Multiverse. Fury also gives him Stark’s glasses, which were meant for his successor. The glasses are equipped with the artificial intelligence E.D.I.T.H., which has access to all the Stark Tech. Now, Parker must get ready to be worthy and responsible for the trust which Tony has put in him while balancing his personal life.
While being a superhero film, it also keeps the same teenage school story vibe which it has in its prequel. Storywise, like its prequel, this film also is a coming-of-age story, where Parker must learn to be much more than what he is, and be a worthy successor. And that’s where I had a little problem in understanding the character development of a Spider-Man because he already fought beside the Avengers against Thanos, that too in space, he totally understands what the death is, so I don’t think showing Parker as an immature or naive character is completely correct. He literally does some silly things in the film, I got that makers want their hero to learn from his mistakes, but I mean, really, what are those? But I liked the fact that the makers went back to the basic philosophy of Spider-Man’s story – “With great powers, comes great responsibilities.”.
Along with this, the makers also filled this film with a lot of fan service moments, of course, I’m not gonna mention those here, but it was fun to watch. The performances of all the characters are apt, specifically, Jake Gyllenhaal, who is an outstanding actor, and every scene he is in, it is just perfect. The visual effects and the action sequences are also pretty awesome, particularly the last one, and the one before the climax. And, most importantly, there are two post-credit scenes, so don’t leave movie theatre before you watch those.
Verdict : The film is full of fan service moments and a decent closure to MCUs phase 3.
